Warm Up with a Bowl of Hearty Burgoo Stew #SipBlack

Sarita Cheaves from VineMeUp Media created a food pairing with Chosen Family 2021 Pinot Noir from our #SipBlack Wine Collection. Burgoo stew is great comfort food during cold winter days.

  • Lamb Shanks

    • Chicken Thighs (bone-in with skin)

    • Chicken Livers

    • Crushed Tomato

    • Carrots

    • Okra

    • Holy Trinity (chopped bell pepper, onion & celery)

    • Chicken Broth

    • Seasonings: Salt, pepper, cayenne, cajun seasoning, Berbere spice


  1. Season the chicken thighs and lamb shanks.

  2. In a Dutch oven or large pot, sear the chicken on both sides. Remove chicken and set aside. You should a good amount of fat in the Dutch oven.

  3. Sear the lamb shanks on both sides and then remove them.

  4. Lower the heat and add the trinity. Season and cook for 5 minutes.

  5. Add the carrots. Cook for another 5 minutes.

  6. Nestle the lamb shanks in the dutch oven.

  7. Then add the chicken thighs.

  8. Cover with chicken broth. Stir and season.

  9. Cook on low for 2-3 hours.

10. Cut okra into strips. Season and sear the okra in olive oil. This prevents the slimy texture.

11. Serve with jasmine rice. Top with okra.

12. Let the veggies cool.
