This 100% Nebbiolo wine, produced from the Picotener clone grown at an altitude of 690 meters, showcases a light ruby hue with garnet reflections. The nose offers a captivating bouquet of red cherry, wild strawberry, and rose petals, layered with hints of dried herbs, leather, and subtle earthiness. On the palate, it delivers vibrant flavors of tart red berries, cranberry, and savory spice, supported by fine-grained tannins and bright acidity, culminating in a refreshing, long finish. The Picotener clone is one of the ancient and traditional Nebbiolo biotypes found in northern Italy, suggesting a deliberate effort to stay true to varietal character. It both honors and reinterprets the tradition of Italian Nebbiolo—especially its Piedmontese roots—while reflecting the unique terroir of northern Mexico.

The 2023 Dominio de las Abejas Nebbiolo is a compelling expression of Baja California's emerging wine scene, crafted by Mexican winemaker Mauricio Ruiz Cantú. Ruiz Cantú, who co-founded the winery in 2015, brings international experience from winemaking stints in Australia, Chile, Spain, and China. His approach emphasizes sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention, allowing the unique terroir of the Valle de Ojos Negros to shine through. Mauricio Ruiz Cantú’s Nebbiolo is not trying to mimic Barolo or Barbaresco—it’s paying homage to the variety's Italian roots while offering a modern, Baja-California-born interpretation. It's fresher, more aromatic, and ready to drink earlier, but still showcases the structure and finesse that make Nebbiolo a revered grape worldwide. For lovers of Italian Nebbiolo, this is a fascinating new-world take with its own honest identity.

Dominio de las Abejas, translating to "Domain of the Bees," reflects the winery's commitment to biodiversity and ecological balance. The estate practices organic farming, certified by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), and employs wild fermentation without clarification or fining, resulting in wines that authentically express the land's character.

With a limited production of 800 cases, the 2023 Dominio de las Abejas Nebbiolo stands as a testament to the potential of Mexican wines, offering a harmonious blend of tradition, innovation, and a deep respect for nature.
