Sofia Brescia is not a person. It is a dedication — a name given to honor the previous generations of wine growers in the Veneto, many of whom were women whose contributions to Italian viticulture have been erased by the historical naming conventions that recorded vineyards, estates, and varieties under the men who owned them on paper, while the women who farmed them went unnamed. Mary Taylor Wines named this frizzante for them. It is a small and deliberate act of recognition, bottled at $14.99 and made to be shared.
Mary Taylor is an American wine importer and négociant who sources directly from small family producers across Europe — prioritizing growers who farm with integrity, produce wines of genuine terroir character, and rarely receive the attention or shelf space their wines deserve. The Sofia Brescia IGT is a Veneto frizzante: a lightly sparkling white wine from northeastern Italy, blending 60% Glera — the grape of Prosecco — with 40% Garganega, the native Veneto white grape that defines Soave. The combination is unusual and genuinely lovely: Glera brings the aromatic lift and fine persistent bubbles; Garganega contributes texture, weight, and the honeyed stone fruit depth that makes this frizzante feel more complex than its category suggests. Citrus, Asian pear, acacia honey, jasmine, and a touch of sea salt on both the nose and palate. The frizzante element — a gentle, natural spritz rather than the aggressive carbonation of a prosecco — makes it refreshing and effortless. At 11% ABV, it is one of the lightest and most joyfully drinkable bottles in the collection.

About Frizzante, Glera & Garganega
Frizzante — “lightly sparkling” in Italian — sits between still wine and fully sparkling wine (spumante) in terms of effervescence. The bubbles are gentler, the pressure lower, and the overall effect more refreshing and less aggressive than a traditional Prosecco or Champagne-style sparkling wine. Glera is the grape that defines Prosecco DOC, grown throughout the Veneto and Friuli regions and prized for its aromatic floral and stone fruit character, naturally high acidity, and affinity for light sparkling production. Garganega is the noble white grape of the Veneto — the primary variety in Soave DOC — known for its almond, citrus, and honeyed stone fruit character and its ability to add texture and complexity to blends. Together in the Sofia Brescia, they create a frizzante that is more interesting and more food-friendly than either grape alone could produce.
Food Pairing
The citrus, Asian pear, acacia honey, jasmine, sea salt, and gentle natural spritz of this Veneto frizzante make it one of the most versatile and genuinely crowd-pleasing lighter wines in the collection. Pairs beautifully with fresh oysters, light seafood appetizers, and shrimp bruschetta — the natural effervescence and saline mineral notes are a perfect match for briny, delicate seafood. The acacia honey and jasmine aromatics make it a wonderful companion for soft-ripened cheeses, prosciutto, and melon, and any antipasto spread where aromatic freshness is the priority. Also excellent alongside light pasta with olive oil and fresh herbs, risotto primavera, and any occasion where you want something sparkling that feels elegant rather than celebratory-obligatory. A natural for aperitivo hour, summer entertaining, game day, and any gathering that calls for a bottle that everyone will enjoy. Serve well-chilled at 40–44°F.
Occasion
This is your go-to Italian frizzante — the bottle for aperitivo, casual summer entertaining, game day, gifting, and any occasion that deserves something lightly sparkling, aromatic, and made with genuine intention. Named for the women wine growers of the Veneto whose names history forgot. At $14.99, one of the most charming, purposeful, and effortlessly drinkable bottles in the collection.
Wine Producer / Historical Notes
Mary Taylor Wines is a woman-owned American import and négociant operation dedicated to sourcing wines directly from small, often overlooked family producers across Europe — bringing wines of genuine terroir character and human story to a market that too often rewards scale over soul. The Sofia Brescia Veneto Frizzante IGT represents both halves of that mission: a Glera and Garganega blend from the Veneto that is genuinely distinctive and food-friendly, named for the generations of women who grew grapes and made wine in northeastern Italy without ever seeing their names recorded in the history of the region they helped build.
