Casa Cadaval’s history begins more than 400 years ago, when the Palace of Muge housed European royalty on the banks of the Tagus River in Portugal’s Tejo region. In the early 19th century, the estate passed into the family when Dona Maria de Faro — Countess of Odemira — married D. Nuno Álvares Pereira de Melo, who became the first Duke of Cadaval. Five generations of women have run the estate since. Today, Countess Teresa Schönborn — Dona Maria’s granddaughter, five generations removed — manages both the vineyards and one of the oldest Lusitanian stud farms on the Iberian Peninsula. The estate is, in every sense, shaped by women and rooted in centuries of stewardship.

The Tejo region takes its name from the Tagus River — the longest river on the Iberian Peninsula — and the former Tagus Delta has endowed Casa Cadaval’s soils with maritime minerals that define the wines: freshness, minerality, and elegance that feel Atlantic-influenced even in the heart of Portugal. The Padre Pedro White is a blend of three Portuguese native white grapes — Fernão Pires, Arinto, and Alvarinho — each contributing a distinct dimension: Fernão Pires for aromatic richness and tropical fruit; Arinto for bright natural acidity and citrus precision; Alvarinho for texture, weight, and the Atlantic salinity that lifts the finish. Pale bright citrus in the glass. Refreshing aromas of tropical notes, citrus, and white flowers. Fruity and fresh on the palate with a creamy, lingering finish. At $16.99, one of the most genuinely elegant and historically grounded Portuguese whites in the collection.

About Tejo & the Native Grape Blend

Tejo — formerly known as Ribatejo — is one of Portugal’s most historically significant wine regions, centered on the Tagus River valley between Lisbon and the Alentejo. The former Tagus Delta left behind alluvial and maritime mineral-rich soils that produce wines of distinctive freshness and elegance. The three grapes in this blend tell the story of Portuguese white wine in miniature: Fernão Pires is Portugal’s most widely planted white grape, prized for its aromatic tropical and floral character; Arinto is one of the country’s most important acidic white varietals, prized for its citrus precision and aging potential; and Alvarinho — the same grape known as Albaríno in Spain’s Rías Baixas — brings Atlantic-influenced salinity, texture, and weight. Together they produce a white wine that is both refreshing and genuinely complex, with the kind of creamy mineral finish that only comes from grapes grown in soils shaped by centuries of river and ocean influence.

Food Pairing

The tropical fruit, citrus, white flowers, fresh acidity, and creamy mineral finish of this Tejo white blend make it one of the most naturally food-versatile and approachable Portuguese whites in the collection. Pairs beautifully with grilled fish, bacalhau preparations, and steamed shellfish — the maritime mineral character and Arinto acidity are a natural match for seafood in any form. The Alvarinho texture and Fernão Pires aromatics make it a wonderful companion for light cream sauces, chicken with lemon and herbs, and any preparation where fragrant white wine is called for. Also excellent alongside fresh goat cheese, light salads, and Portuguese-style appetizers. A natural for weeknight dinners, casual summer entertaining, and any occasion that calls for an elegant, mineral-driven white at an exceptional price. Serve well-chilled at 44–48°F.

Wine Producer / Historical Notes

Casa Cadaval’s history dates to the Palace of Muge — a royal residence on the banks of the Tagus River in Portugal’s Tejo region — over 400 years ago. In the early 19th century, Dona Maria de Faro (Countess of Odemira) married D. Nuno Álvares Pereira de Melo, who became the first Duke of Cadaval, bringing the estate into the family. Five generations of women have managed it since. Today, Countess Teresa Schönborn oversees both the vineyards and one of the oldest Lusitanian stud farms on the Iberian Peninsula — an estate defined by continuity, stewardship, and the particular kind of excellence that only centuries of dedication can produce. The vineyards benefit from the maritime mineral legacy of the former Tagus Delta, which endows the soils with the freshness, minerality, and elegance that define every Casa Cadaval wine.
