Dry Mosel Riesling is one of the wine world’s most thrilling expressions — and this 2023 Steinmetz Wintricher Geierslay Trocken Riesling “Sur Lie” takes it a step further. Eleven months of extended lees contact transform the grape’s signature electric acidity into something softer, weightier, and beautifully complex: a bone-dry Riesling of exceptional tension, creamy texture, and breathtaking mineral depth. Rated 95 Points by JamesSuckling.com, from a Black-owned, woman-owned, third-generation family winery in the heart of the Mosel.
Wine Details & Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes: Highly expressive and complex on the nose, showing a brilliant intersection of pristine fruit and deep, savory lees influence. Aromas of ripe yellow peach, crisp green pear, and tart lemon curd layered alongside subtle undertones of fresh sourdough, ginger skin, and wild white blossoms. On the palate, exceptional tension and concentration within a characteristically light framework. The extended 11-month maturation on the gross lees imparts a distinctly soft, rounded, and gently creamy texture that beautifully rounds out the grape’s racy, lithe acidity. A chiseled, laser-focused core of wet blue-grey slate and quartzite minerality leads to a remarkably long, structured, bone-dry finish with a lingering salty mineral drive and a clean, vibrant snap of citrus zest.

Wine Producer / Historical Notes
Steinmetz is a third-generation, Black-owned, woman-owned family winery in Brauneberg, in the heart of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. Sammie and Stefan Steinmetz continue a tradition their family started over a hundred years ago, bringing together heritage, innovation, and craft in every bottle. The winery practices natural viticulture — no fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides — with controlled yields and careful hand-harvesting and sorting. Steinmetz has focused on acquiring plots of old, own-rooted Riesling parcels across prestigious sites including the Brauneberger Juffer, Kestener Paulinshofberg, Piesporter Goldtropfchen, Wintricher Geierslay, and Dhroner Hofberg. The extremely steep slopes of these sites can only be worked by hand. Stuart Pigott of JamesSuckling.com champions Steinmetz’s dry Mosel Rieslings for their breathtaking intensity and off-the-scale concentration.
