2023 Alpha Estate Hedgehog Vineyard Xinomavro, Amyndeon-Macedonia, Greece

Deep ruby-red in the glass, this single-vineyard Xinomavro opens with layered aromas of ripe red berries, blackberry, and cherry accented by leather, vanilla, clove, and peppery spice. The palate is structured yet refined, revealing flavors of dark cherry, plum, and subtle earthy complexity supported by lively acidity and polished tannins. Elegant oak integration adds depth while maintaining freshness, leading to a long, persistent finish with lingering red fruit and delicate spice typical of Amyndeon’s cool-climate expression of Xinomavro.

Alpha Estate, located on the high-altitude Amyndeon plateau in northwestern Greece, was founded in 1997 by viticulturist Makis Mavridis and oenologist Angelos Iatridis. Today, the next generation is increasingly involved in guiding the estate, including Angeliki Iatridou and Emorfili Mavridou. Angeliki works as assistant winemaker, participating in vineyard and cellar decisions while continuing the family’s precision-driven winemaking philosophy. Emorfili, a chemical engineer, contributes to the winery’s technical and operational development while supporting the estate’s expanding international presence. Together they help carry forward the winery’s vision of sustainable viticulture and terroir-focused wines while preparing to lead the next chapter of Alpha Estate.
