Casa Cadaval is one of Portugal’s most extraordinary wine estates — and this 2023 Padre Pedro Tinto is one of the most remarkable value wines in our entire collection. A 5,400-hectare estate between Lisbon and the Tagus River’s left bank, Casa Cadaval has been managed by five consecutive generations of Portuguese women, with a history dating back to the 16th century when the Muge Estate Palace housed European royalty. Today, Countess Teresa Schönborn chairs the board of directors, continuing a legacy of female leadership that is as rare as it is inspiring. The Padre Pedro Tinto — named for Father Peter’s Estate Vineyard — is a classic Portuguese red blend of Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, and Trincadeira that delivers exceptional complexity, smooth luxurious tannins, and a long finish at a price that earned it a Washington Post Top 12 Best Bargain of the Year. Woman-owned, family-owned, sustainably farmed.

Food Pairing

The raspberry, dark cherry, jammy black currant, and soft spice character of this RibaTejo red blend make it a wonderfully versatile companion for a wide range of dishes. Pairs beautifully with pork roast, braised lamb, and roasted chicken. The Touriga Nacional’s structure and the Trincadeira’s spice make it a wonderful match for hearty stews, grilled sausages, and herb-crusted meats. Also excellent alongside aged cheeses, a well-curated charcuterie board, and even on its own — with enough finesse to enjoy without a food pairing. Enjoy at 62–66°F.

Occasion

This is your go-to Portuguese red — the bottle for everyday dinners, special occasions, entertaining, and gifting the red wine enthusiast who appreciates exceptional value, genuine terroir, and one of the most remarkable female-led wine legacies in the world. A Washington Post Best Bargain of the Year that punches well above its price point and tells a story worth sharing at every table.

Wine Producer / Historical Notes

The Muge Estate Palace has a centuries-old history, dating back to before it belonged to the Cadaval family. It was once inhabited by Queen Leonor of Austria — third wife of King Manuel I, sister of Emperor Charles V, and mother of Infanta Maria — who lived here until 1530. At the beginning of the 17th century, the property came under the dominion of the House of Cadaval when Dona Maria de Faro, Countess of Odemira, married D. Nuno Álvares Pereira de Melo, 1st Duke of Cadaval. The Cadaval family currently owns an estate totaling approximately 5,400 hectares and has been managed by women for five consecutive generations. Today, Countess Teresa Schönborn chairs the board of directors. The vineyards are influenced by the presence of the former Tagus Delta, which endowed the soils with maritime minerals that give Casa Cadaval wines their unique freshness, minerality, and elegance. Teresa’s estate also boasts one of the oldest Lusitanian stud farms on the Iberian Peninsula — a living testament to the estate’s extraordinary depth of history and heritage.
