Gwen's Orange Juice Cake + the Pairings That Make Every Slice a Celebration
Gwen's Orange Juice Cake + the Pairings That Make Every Slice a Celebration
A Shades of Vino Club Recipe | Submitted by Gwen A.
Some recipes live in a handwritten card tucked inside a kitchen drawer. They're not from a cookbook — they're from a grandmother, an aunt, a neighbor who pressed the paper into your hands and said, "You have to make this." They preserve memories as much as ingredients.
Gwen A.'s Orange Juice Cake is that kind of recipe. A Shades of Vino Club member and contributor to our 2026 Summer Shades of Vino Collection, Gwen brought us a Bundt cake that is pure sunshine: butter cake mix enriched with vanilla pudding, brightened with orange juice, and finished with vanilla extract and optional walnuts for crunch. It's the kind of cake that disappears at every gathering — and leaves everyone asking for the recipe.
We found two extraordinary pairings that honor every bright, sweet, citrus-kissed bite. And with this recipe, we close out our 2026 Summer Shades of Vino recipe series in the most celebratory way possible.
The Recipe: Gwen's Orange Juice Cake
The genius of this recipe is its simplicity. The butter cake mix provides a rich, tender crumb. The vanilla pudding adds moisture and a silky texture that keeps the cake fresh for days. The orange juice — the star of the show — infuses every bite with bright, natural citrus flavor. And the vanilla extract ties it all together with warmth and depth. This is a cake that tastes like it took hours to make, but comes together in minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 box butter cake mix
- 1 box vanilla pudding mix
- 1 cup orange juice
- ½ cup oil
- 4 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Walnuts, chopped (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease and flour a Bundt pan thoroughly.
- In a large bowl, combine cake mix, pudding mix, orange juice, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth and well combined, about 2 minutes.
- If using walnuts, fold them into the batter.
- Pour batter into the prepared Bundt pan.
- Bake for 50–60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the cake is golden brown.
- Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely before serving.
- Optional: dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with a simple orange glaze (orange juice + powdered sugar) for extra citrus punch.
Serves: 10–12 | Total Time: ~1.5 hours | Difficulty: Easy
The Pairing: What Do You Drink with Orange Juice Cake?
Orange Juice Cake is a joyful pairing challenge. The cake is sweet, bright, and citrus-forward — with a tender, moist crumb and warm vanilla undertones. You want pairings that celebrate those flavors rather than compete with them. Something with bubbles to match the cake's lightness. Something with honeyed sweetness to echo the vanilla and orange.
We chose two pairings that approach this cake from completely different angles — and both are absolutely perfect for a celebration.
🍾 Primary Pairing: NV Browne Family "Do Epic Sh*t" Sparkling
There is no better way to celebrate the final recipe in our 2026 Summer Collection than with a bottle of sparkling wine that announces itself with pure joy. The NV Browne Family "Do Epic Sh*t" Sparkling American Méthode Champenoise from New Mexico is exactly that bottle.
Made in the traditional Champagne method — Méthode Champenoise — this is a sparkling wine with real craft and character behind it. From New Mexico, one of America's most underappreciated wine regions, it brings a sense of adventure and discovery that perfectly matches the spirit of this entire recipe series.
- Lively bubbles enhance the bright citrus flavors of the orange juice cake, lifting every bite and making the whole experience feel lighter and more celebratory.
- Bright fruit character — apple, pear, and a hint of citrus — complements the orange flavor in the cake without competing with it, creating a harmonious pairing that feels effortless.
- Clean, refreshing finish cuts through the sweetness of the cake, keeping the palate refreshed and ready for another slice.
At $24.99, this is a sparkling wine that delivers genuine celebration at an accessible price. And the name says it all — this is a wine for people who are out here doing epic things. Like Gwen, who brought us this beautiful recipe. Like every member of the Shades of Vino Club who shared their family recipes with us this summer.

🍯 Secondary Pairing: NV Bobesa "Marigold" Honey Mead
For a pairing that leans into the cake's sweetness and warmth, look no further than the mead that has become one of the most beloved bottles in our entire collection.
The NV Bobesa "Marigold" Honey Mead from Upper Marlboro, Maryland — which you may remember from Gwen's own Sweet Potato Casserole pairing earlier in this series — returns for a beautiful encore alongside her Orange Juice Cake.
- Honeyed sweetness mirrors the natural sweetness of the cake and the orange juice, creating a seamless, harmonious pairing that feels like it was designed specifically for this recipe.
- Floral and citrus notes — the "Marigold" expression's signature character — echo the orange flavor in the cake, adding a layer of aromatic complexity that makes every sip more interesting.
- Warm, lingering finish complements the vanilla extract in the batter, tying the glass and the cake together in a way that feels inevitable and deeply satisfying.
At $34 for a 500ml bottle, this is a special-occasion pour for a special-occasion cake. And it comes with a story that matters: Bobesa is Black-owned, a Maryland meadery whose work is expanding what we think of when we think of American craft beverages. Every bottle is a statement about who belongs in the world of fine drinks.

The Bigger Picture: A Summer of Family Recipes
Gwen's Orange Juice Cake is the final recipe in our 2026 Summer Shades of Vino Collection — and it's a perfect note to end on. This is a recipe that preserves memory. A handwritten card. A family tradition. The kind of dish that connects generations and reminds us why food is so much more than sustenance.
Over the course of this summer series, our Shades of Vino Club members shared 13 recipes that together tell a story about American home cooking at its most diverse, creative, and deeply personal. From Maryland seafood stew to Louisiana crawfish pie. From Pennsylvania Dutch chicken corn soup to a Chesapeake crab cake. From a sweet potato casserole to an orange juice Bundt cake that tastes like sunshine.
Every recipe came with a wine pairing — and every wine pairing came with a story about a producer who is rewriting what American wine can be. Black-owned wineries. Women-owned wineries. Minority-led producers. Meaderies and sparkling wine makers from New Mexico and Maryland. Pinot Noir from Oregon and California. Chardonnay from Michigan. Gamay from the Willamette Valley.
This is the Shades of Vino spirit: food and wine that tells the full story of America. And it has been an extraordinary summer.
Pairing Tips for Citrus Cakes & Desserts
Citrus desserts are one of the most rewarding wine pairing categories — and one of the most misunderstood. Here's how to think about it:
- Bubbles are almost always right: Sparkling wines have a natural affinity for citrus desserts — the acidity and effervescence cut through the sweetness and enhance the citrus flavors.
- Match sweetness with sweetness: A dry wine will taste harsh alongside a sweet cake. Look for beverages with their own sweetness — like a mead, a demi-sec sparkling, or a late-harvest wine.
- Think beyond wine: Mead, cider, and other fermented beverages can be extraordinary pairings for sweet desserts. The Bobesa Marigold Mead is proof of that.
- Vanilla loves honey: The vanilla extract in this cake creates a natural bridge to honey-forward beverages like mead — one of the great natural affinities in dessert pairing.
- Serve at the right temperature: The sparkling wine is best well chilled (around 42–48°F). The mead is best slightly chilled (around 50–55°F) to let its floral complexity shine.
