Autumn’s Evolving Palette: Fragrant, Layered & Expressive

As autumn transforms the landscape with deeper colors, changing textures, and a different rhythm, this quarter’s Importer’s Corner collection follows that evolution in the glass. Curated by Alyssa Wolf of Red Wolf Imports and offered exclusively through The Wine Concierge, four wines from Portugal and South Africa move across a palette of aromatic whites, expressive rosé, vibrant red, and a deeper, more structured blend — each bringing its own character to the changing season.

The collection offers both something entirely new and an opportunity to experience familiar producers through new vintages and different expressions. Making its Importer’s Corner debut, Quinta da Lixa’s 2025 Vinhão Morgado da Vila introduces members to a new wine and an unexpected side of Portugal’s Vinho Verde region. Best enjoyed with a slight chill, this vibrant red was specifically selected as a bridge between seasons — refreshing enough for lingering warmer days while bringing the deeper color and dark-fruit character that begins to feel right as fall arrives. Alongside it, returning producers arrive through different vintages and expressions, reminding us that wine changes from year to year, shaped by each growing season, vineyard conditions, and choices made in the cellar. Revisiting a producer through a new vintage isn’t simply returning to the same experience; it is discovering what has evolved.

Portugal brings two distinctly different ends of the palette. Quinta da Lixa’s 2025 Vinhão Morgado da Vila from Vinho Verde offers an unexpected expression of the region: a deeply colored, vibrant red driven by lively acidity and dark berry character rather than heaviness. Served cool or lightly chilled, its energetic acidity and fruit make it an ideal transitional red — carrying the ease of warmer-weather drinking into the deeper flavors and colors of autumn. Casa Cadaval’s 2023 Padre Pedro Tinto from Tejo takes the collection deeper, combining Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, and Alfrocheiro with ripe fruit, violet, spice, silky tannins, and greater structure.

Between them, South Africa’s Stellenbosch provides fragrance, color, and texture. Silver Myn’s 2026 Dry Rosé brings dry red-fruit character from the elevated Banghoek Valley, while Villiera’s 2022 Jasmine Fragrant White layers Muscat, Gewürztraminer, and Riesling into a floral, gently spicy, and lightly sweet expression made for flavorful food and the changing autumn table.

Together, these four wines capture autumn not through one particular style, but through its contrasts: vivid color and deeper tones, fragrance and spice, lighter textures alongside greater structure. Beginning with a fragrant white through a juicy, rounded rosé toward a luscious red made to take a chill and progressing into the more structured Portuguese red, the collection reflects that unique moment when warmer days overlap with cooler evenings and our tastes begin to change with them. From Portugal’s Vinho Verde and Tejo regions to Stellenbosch’s mountain-influenced vineyards, this evolving palette offers four distinctive ways to experience the season — and another reminder that, just like autumn itself, wine is always changing.
