The red gravel soil in our hallmark Pinotage blocks gives these vineyards their name — Rooiland (red land). Not only is Pinotage South Africa’s very own grape, it was first planted down the road from Kaapzicht. As no other wine better shows where we came from or who we are, we craft the wine according to its classic style: intense, plush, and opulent.
This modern, yet classic style of Pinotage is our homage to South Africa’s signature grape variety. Generous notes of blackberry, mulberry and blackcurrant are present on the nose, while rich oak and vanilla spice creates a lasting and textural finish.
The name “Kaapzicht” (Cape View) comes from the fantastic view this winery has over Cape Town and Table Mountain. Since the first vintage was bottled in 1984, Kaapzicht has become highly respected for both quality and value, having earned a multitude of local and international awards. The Steytler Family has been running their 190 hectare large estate hands-on for four generations.
Winemaking team Danie Steytler, who took over the reins from his dad in 2009, and Kayleigh Hattingh continue the family tradition. Kayleigh studied viticulture and oenology at Stellenbosch University, and completed her studies in 2016. During the first year after her studies, she worked with Andrea and Chris Mullineux of Mullineux and Leeu Family Wines in Franschhoek, who helped cultivate her passion for terroir-driven wines. She then took this newfound passion to California where she worked as a harvest intern at the OVID winery in Napa Valley. "It’s quite perfect that my past experience has led me to Kaapzicht. Here is where my passion for terroir-driven and site-specific wines are fueled," says Kayleigh Hattingh, winemaker at Kaapzicht Wine Estate.
