California’s Central Coast is one of the most exciting Pinot Noir regions in the world — and Chamisal Vineyards has been proving it since 1973, when it became the very first commercial vineyard planted in what would become the Edna Valley AVA. This 2023 San Luis Obispo Pinot Noir is a true expression of coastal Pinot at its purest and most refined: bright, juicy, and gracefully structured, with a slight chill that makes it an ideal summer sipper. Now led by its first-ever female head winemaker, Brianne Engles, and an all-women leadership trio ushering this legendary estate into a bold new chapter.

Food Pairing

The bright acidity, soft tannins, and red fruit character of this coastal Pinot Noir make it one of the most food-friendly reds you can pour. Pairs beautifully with roasted salmon, grilled duck breast, and herb-roasted chicken. The cherry and raspberry notes make it a wonderful companion for mushroom risotto, truffle pasta, and charcuterie. Also excellent alongside soft cheeses, pinot-friendly cheeseboards, and light pasta dishes. Serve slightly cool at 55–60°F — or with a slight chill in summer — to preserve the delicate aromatics and fresh fruit character.

Occasion

This is your everyday coastal Pinot — the bottle for summer entertaining, casual dinners, wine club selections, and gifting the Pinot Noir lover who appreciates pure, refined Central Coast character at an accessible price. A standout choice for anyone who wants to support women-owned excellence in California wine, and a beautiful introduction to Edna Valley Pinot Noir for anyone who hasn’t yet discovered this extraordinary region.

Wine Producer / Historical Notes

Chamisal Vineyards pioneered fine winemaking on California’s Central Coast as the very first commercial vineyard planted in what would later become the Edna Valley AVA in 1973 — a risky gamble, planting vines just five miles from the Pacific Ocean. Today, this historic 82-acre estate spans three distinct soil types — Chamise Shaly Loam, Tierra Sandy Loam, and Salinas Clay Loam — which impart a signature complexity to their fruit. Coinciding with its 50th anniversary, Chamisal entered a historic new era by appointing Brianne Engles as its first-ever female head winemaker, shattering a long-standing glass ceiling. Engles guides the 2023 vintage with a minimal-intervention, experimental philosophy designed to reflect an unmanipulated sense of place and time, balancing a hands-off cellar approach with progressive, regenerative land practices including biodynamic farming and the implementation of a native Miyawaki forest. Her appointment anchors a pioneering, all-female leadership trio of industry veterans who now spearhead operations from winemaking to hospitality — long overdue in an often overlooked region.
