Brewery / Historical Notes

Soul Mega was founded in 2018 by Elliott Johnson and Jahi Reid, who transitioned from homebrewing enthusiasts to commercial brewers in 2019. Washington D.C.’s second-oldest Black-owned beer company, Soul Mega has built its brand around a commitment to inclusion, creativity, and community impact — making craft beer accessible and engaging, especially for communities often overlooked in the craft beer scene. The vibrant label for Metropolis IPA was created by renowned D.C. mural artist Juan “Criomatic” Pineda, whose urban-contemporary style reflects the beer’s dynamic identity and cultural storytelling. In the words of co-founders Elliott Johnson and Jahi Reid: “Soul Mega began with a shared curiosity. The belief that beer could spark connection and elevate culture. What started with pouring for friends and neighbors grew into pop-ups, then into Soul Mega’s 2018 incorporation and commercial launch in 2019. From day one, the mission has been bigger than beer. We create craft-beer experiences that feel expressive, inclusive, and rooted in culture — especially for communities of color long left out of the craft-beer world. Soul Mega isn’t just what’s in the can. It’s a catalyst for greatness, connection, and the shared experience of rising together.”
