Texas Sangiovese is a revelation — and McPherson Cellars has been proving it for over 40 years. This 2021 Sagmore Vineyard Sangiovese Reserve from the High Plains is Tuscany’s foundational grape reimagined through the lens of Texas terroir: supple, medium-bodied, and deeply expressive, with the sun-drenched character of the High Plains giving the wine a savory, earthy depth that is entirely its own. Sangiovese was one of the first varieties planted by the late Dr. Clinton “Doc” McPherson in the late 1960s — a pioneer of the modern Texas wine industry — and this Reserve bottling honors that legacy with elegance and restraint.
Wine Details & Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes: Aromas of ripe dark cherry, dark plum, and boysenberry framed by dusty earth, powdered cocoa, and dry, savory herbs — reminiscent of the rolling hills of Tuscany, but decidedly reflective of Texas terroir. The palate reveals an elegant structure with gentle grip and a long, savory finish. Medium-bodied and supple with excellent balance.

Food Pairing
The dark cherry, savory herb, and earthy character of this High Plains Sangiovese make it a natural companion for Italian-inspired and hearty American dishes alike. Pairs beautifully with wood-fired pizza, pasta Bolognese, and herb-roasted chicken. The dusty earth and powdered cocoa notes make it a wonderful match for braised lamb, grilled sausages, and mushroom-based dishes. Also excellent alongside aged pecorino, hard Italian cheeses, and a well-curated charcuterie board. Decant 20–30 minutes before serving and enjoy at 60–65°F to allow the wine’s savory complexity to fully open.

Wine Producer / Historical Notes
The McPherson family has been a part of Texas grape growing and winemaking for over 40 years. McPherson Cellars was created by winemaker Kim McPherson to honor her father, Dr. Clinton “Doc” McPherson — a founder and pioneer of the modern Texas wine industry who was among the first to plant Sangiovese in Texas in the late 1960s. The High Plains AVA, located in the Texas Panhandle at elevations of 3,000–4,000 feet, offers a unique combination of intense sunlight, dramatic day-to-night temperature swings, and well-drained sandy soils that produce wines of exceptional concentration and natural acidity. Reminiscent of the rolling hills of Tuscany, but decidedly and proudly Texan — McPherson Cellars is a family legacy that continues to define what Texas fine wine can be.
