From Nigeria to Maryland, Ifeoma Cleopatra Onyia, is making history as the founder of Clyopatra’s Winery & Vineyard—the first African immigrant-owned winery and vineyard in the United States. Onyia is an African-born vintner who grew up in Nigeria and attended school in England. Her journey is one of passion, perseverance, and a commitment to breaking barriers in an industry where Black and immigrant winemakers remain underrepresented.

Ms. Onyia’s love for winemaking began at just eight years old, when she became fascinated by wine and her father's love for it growing up in Nigeria with her late father. He was a collector and a connoisseur. At a young age, Onyia told her father she wanted to do the same, but he told her she could do even more. Inspired by her father’s encouragement, she pursued her dream, immersing herself in viticulture and enology while navigating the challenges of an industry with limited diversity.

Determined to bring her vision to life, decades later, she planted her vineyard’s first vines, sourced from Maryland’s Eastern Shore, and sources her grapes from that area as well, laying the foundation for the wines she will now produce. Today, she oversees every aspect of the vineyard, winery, and business operations, ensuring that her wines reflect both her African heritage and Maryland’s unique terroir.

Her son, SJ Oyebade, plays an important supporting role in the business, assisting with operations and logistics while pursuing his MBA. Together, they work to grow the winery and share their passion for winemaking with a wider audience.

Sitting on about six acres off Brooklyn Bridge Road in Laurel, Maryland, Clyopatra’s Winery & Vineyard offers more than just wine—it’s a space for education, inspiration, and inclusion. The tasting room on C St in laurel's art district, welcomes all guests to experience handcrafted wines, each bottle telling a story of resilience, culture, and innovation.

Beyond crafting exceptional wines, Ms. Onyia is dedicated to fostering diversity in the wine industry, mentoring aspiring winemakers, and inspiring the next generation of Black and immigrant entrepreneurs.
